March 22 is World Water Day. This is a day when we raise the urgent issue of a global problem - water scarcity.
Statistics:
● 2.2 billion people do not have access to safe drinking water.
● 4.5 billion people experience water scarcity at least one month a year.
● By 2050, water scarcity could affect up to 5.7 billion people.
Causes:
● Climate change: droughts, floods, depletion of water bodies.
● Pollution: industrial and domestic wastewater, agricultural fertilizers.
● Irrational use: overconsumption of water in agriculture, industry, and households.
What to do?
The global society is already taking action:
● In 2015, UN countries adopted Sustainable Development Goal 6 (SDG 6): ensure universal access to clean water and sanitation by 2030.
● The UN coordinates the efforts of various international organizations, governments, non-profit organizations, and the private sector to preserve water resources.
● Various programs are being implemented: construction of new water treatment facilities, introduction of water-saving technologies, raising awareness among the population about the importance of careful water use.
Each of us can contribute:
● Do not waste water.
● Use water-saving attachments and appliances.
● Support environmental initiatives.
● Spread information about the problem of water scarcity and ways to solve it.
