In Kyrgyzstan, women from key populations—those facing violence, discrimination, and health vulnerabilities often struggle to find safe, judgement-free support. These challenges not only affect individual lives but hinder global goals such as gender equality, justice and strong institutions, and sustainability. The Public Foundation (PF) “Ganesha”, with backing from the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), is reshaping this narrative. By providing a safe haven and addressing systemic barriers, they are fostering lasting change.

Transforming lives through community-driven solutions

PF “Ganesha” is the only crisis centre in Kyrgyzstan offering holistic support for women from vulnerable groups, including survivors of violence, those released from prison, and individuals at high risk of or living with HIV. Operating under the leadership of Tatiana Musagalieva, a veteran advocate for social justice, the centre has been at the forefront of change since February 2024.

Statistics highlight the impact of this initiative:

  • 122 women and 165 individuals using drugs received crisis support in 2024.

  • 178 women underwent training in violence prevention and response.

These efforts extend beyond immediate crisis management. By addressing psychological needs, ensuring access to HIV and tuberculosis testing, and facilitating document restoration, the centre enables women to rebuild their lives.

A partnership rooted in global goals

PF “Ganesha” collaborates with the UNDP/Global Fund project, focusing on ensuring gender equality in access to healthcare and fostering economic equality. The centre integrates gender-sensitive approaches into prevention and treatment programs, creating inclusive spaces that align with sustainability goals.

Tatiana emphasises the importance of these partnerships:

“UNDP is the only organisation that supports such initiatives. Their assistance enables us to create safe spaces and meet the specific needs of women.”

Breaking barriers and stereotypes

Real-life stories underscore the transformative power of PF “Ganesha”. One case involved a man unable to secure employment or assert his parental rights due to lack of documentation, resulting in aggression towards his wife. The centre facilitated the restoration of his documents and provided psychological counselling, which ultimately improved family dynamics.

These success stories demonstrate the far-reaching impact of the centre’s work—not only on individual lives but on the global society. Through education and empowerment, PF “Ganesha” challenges harmful stereotypes and contributes to a more inclusive future.

Efforts like those of PF “Ganesha” exemplify how global collaboration is essential in addressing interconnected issues of climate action, economic equality, and social justice. Achieving the global goals requires collective action across sectors and regions. Organisations like UNDP, through funding and technical support, highlight the importance of sustained partnerships in driving change.

Shaping the future

As Tatiana Musagalieva puts it:

“A woman should realise that she doesn’t have to be shy to ask for help.”

PF “Ganesha” not only offers support but inspires hope and empowerment. By breaking cycles of violence and discrimination, the centre paves the way for a society rooted in peace and justice.
