Reimagines city-building: transforming old tyres into innovative green rooftops

Ceyes, a Dutch tyre recycling consultancy, is leading the way in sustainable city-building by repurposing end-of-life tyres and waste from artificial grass playing fields to create innovative rooftop panels that bring both environmental and thermal benefits. This closed-loop approach not only tackles the issue of tyre waste but also contributes to the vision of a global society that prioritizes sustainability and aligns with the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Ceyes has developed stormwater retention panels made from rubber grains derived from shredded tyres and waste from artificial grass fields.

These panels, designed in a grid shape with water-holding pockets, serve as beds for vegetation on rooftops. One panel can retain approximately 20 litres of rainwater, offering a dual functionality as both a stormwater retention system and a cooling solution for buildings.

The thermal benefits of these green roofs are twofold. On hot days, the rainwater evaporates, naturally cooling down the building and reducing the need for energy-intensive air conditioning. In cooler temperatures, the water remains in the panels, providing irrigation for the plants. This versatile and adaptable solution demonstrates the potential for widespread adoption, promoting sustainable practices in urban development.

What sets Ceyes' product apart is its commitment to sustainability throughout its lifecycle. The panels are self-sustaining, require minimal maintenance, and are fully recyclable. The company claims that the production of these rubber granule panels generates only 6.14 kg of CO2 per square meter, and the balance between production and CO2 absorption is achieved within four to eight years. Furthermore, each panel has a lifespan comparable to that of a rubber tyre (over 100 years) and can be customized to suit the size and shape requirements of various rooftops and built environments.

Green roofs, also known as living roofs or vegetated roofs, offer a multitude of benefits to both the environment and building owners. Improved air quality, increased biodiversity, reduced urban heat island effect, carbon sequestration, enhanced insulation, and noise reduction are just a few of the advantages they provide. Additionally, green roofs tend to have a longer lifespan and can increase property value, making them a valuable investment for sustainable city-building.

In line with the vision of a global society that values sustainability, Ceyes' initiative helps close the loop through upcycling. With approximately one billion tyres reaching the end of their life each year, and landfills worldwide already burdened with over four billion discarded tyres, transforming these waste materials into rooftop panels presents an environmentally friendly solution. Not only does it divert waste from landfills, but it also offers practical benefits that align with the principles of sustainable development and the SDGs.

By utilizing innovative and sustainable approaches like the Ceyes' green rooftop panels, civil society, governments, and businesses can work together to address environmental challenges and foster sustainable city-building. Such initiatives contribute to SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities) by promoting sustainable infrastructure, SDG 13 (Climate Action) by reducing greenhouse gas emissions, and SDG 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production) by promoting circular economy principles.

As cities strive to create healthier and more sustainable environments for their residents, the integration of green roofs becomes increasingly important. These initiatives not only enhance the aesthetic appeal of urban landscapes but also provide opportunities for improved mental health and well-being, enabling individuals to connect with nature and enjoy the benefits of green spaces.

The tire-to-roof transformation showcased by Ceyes exemplifies the power of sustainable innovation in achieving a greener and more sustainable future. It serves as an inspiration for other industries and individuals to adopt similar sustainable practices, fostering a global society that recognizes the intrinsic value of nature and works collectively towards achieving the SDGs and a sustainable future for all.
