Landscape degradation affects up to 40% of the Earth's land, impacting 3.2 billion people and contributing to climate change, biodiversity loss, and food insecurity. Commonland understands the persistence required to restore these landscapes.

Commonland, a non-profit organization, aims to restore 100 million hectares of degraded landscapes by 2040. Their approach aligns seamlessly with SDG 15, one of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) that focuses on addressing pressing global issues through environmental rejuvenation.

To tackle these issues, Commonland has developed the 4 Returns framework—a practical and comprehensive approach to landscape restoration, uniting diverse stakeholders. From farmers to policymakers, they collaborate to achieve a common goal—restoring landscapes while generating sustainable income for local communities. This practical and adaptable approach empowers landscape stakeholders to co-create a long-term vision and collectively take action.

John Dennis Liu, an ecosystem ambassador for the Commonland Foundation, is a film maker and an unwavering protector of nature dedicated to promoting global awareness of ecological restoration and sustainable development. John Dennis Liu's extensive contributions have served as a guiding light, illuminating the possibilities of large-scale ecosystem restoration. His tireless efforts have played a pivotal role in promoting a more sustainable and environmentally conscious world.

One of the notable projects demonstrating Commonland's approach is in the Altiplano Estepario, Spain. This semi-arid steppe region faces water scarcity and desertification, impacting local communities. Since 2014, Commonland's landscape partner, AlVelAl, has used the 4 Returns Framework to bring together local stakeholders, creating a shared vision for the territory.

Currently, AlVelAl Association has more than 490 members, including 280 farmers, and has developed regenerative businesses, contributing to holistic landscape restoration. This alliance has inspired similar initiatives in Spain and Portugal, with the goal of establishing a 4 Returns Network across the Iberian Peninsula.

Commonland's dedication to advancing landscape restoration seamlessly aligns with broader global goals, especially the SDGs. By making landscape restoration the new norm, they contribute to addressing the world's most pressing challenges while highlighting the significance of science in daily life.
