Blue Planet Alliance, founded in 2020 by environmental advocate and entrepreneur Henk Rogers, is a nonprofit organisation dedicated to promoting climate solutions through legislative action. Their mission is to encourage islands and countries worldwide to adopt laws mandating a shift to 100% renewable energy by 2045, working in alignment with governments, businesses, and individuals. As part of their broader environmental efforts, the organisation strives to minimise the negative impacts of human behaviour on the planet, aiming to create a more harmonious relationship with nature.

Henk Rogers: From video games to environmental advocacy

Henk Rogers, renowned for his pioneering work in Japan's video game industry and for securing the worldwide rights to the game Tetris, has turned his focus to environmental causes in recent years. Rogers is not only the founder of Blue Planet Alliance but also the driving force behind its sister organisation, Blue Planet Foundation, which successfully campaigned for the State of Hawaii to pass a law mandating 100% renewable energy by 2045. His personal commitment to eliminating the world's reliance on fossil fuels has positioned him as a key figure in the global environmental movement.

In an exclusive interview, Rogers discusses the Alliance's ambitious goals and the strategies they employ to galvanise legislative action and public support for renewable energy initiatives.

Expanding global initiatives

Blue Planet Alliance currently operates five core initiatives aimed at transforming public, private, and individual behaviour. These initiatives range from partnerships with over 140 global organisations to community engagement efforts through the Global Youth Ambassador Program, which empowers young leaders aged 16 to 30 to spread the Alliance’s message globally.

One of their standout efforts is the Blue Planet Action App, a platform designed to engage individuals in climate action. The app encourages users to complete tasks, from small, everyday changes such as turning off lights to larger projects like restoring coral reefs or reducing carbon emissions in entire countries. The app draws on gamification techniques used in the gaming industry to foster sustained engagement, allowing users to accumulate points and unlock levels of achievement.

Driving consumer and corporate change

To further its mission, Blue Planet Alliance has introduced the Blue Planet Rating System, powered by the Global Sustainable Enterprise System (GSES). This system provides consumers with transparent, verified data on the sustainability of products and services, allowing them to make more environmentally conscious choices. It rates companies and products on a scale of five planets, based on over 550 global certifications and standards.

This rating system serves as a valuable tool for consumers who want to support eco-friendly companies, while also encouraging businesses to improve their environmental impact in order to stay competitive in an increasingly sustainability-driven market. The system is already being integrated into e-commerce platforms, review sites, and booking systems.

A growing movement for change

Blue Planet Alliance's global reach is expanding rapidly, as more organisations and individuals join their efforts to create a future free from fossil fuels. With their innovative approach, Blue Planet Alliance is not only shaping policy but also empowering everyday people to take meaningful actions to combat climate change. Their work reflects a comprehensive approach to addressing the climate crisis, combining grassroots efforts with high-level policy advocacy.
