Addressing educational inequity is a cornerstone of achieving the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Among these, goals such as quality education, gender equality, and economic equality are vital to building a sustainable future. Education not only equips individuals with the tools to thrive but also fuels advancements in science, fosters climate action, and strengthens justice and strong institutions. Yet, millions of children worldwide remain disadvantaged due to a lack of educational resources, a gap First Book is dedicated to closing.

Transforming lives through educational equity

First Book, a non-profit organisation, has been revolutionising access to education for over 30 years. With a network of over 600,000 educators and professionals, the organisation reaches 6.5 million children annually in low-income communities across North America. Since its founding in 1992, First Book has distributed more than 250 million high-quality books and educational materials, ensuring access to learning resources for those who need it most.

The impact of these efforts is profound. Studies have shown that the number of books in a home is a significant predictor of educational success. Yet, 30% of school libraries in the United States fail to meet literacy-rich guidelines, and 54% of educators report having ten or fewer books per child in their classrooms. Through initiatives such as the First Book Marketplace, the organisation bridges this gap, making books and learning tools affordable or free for educators serving underprivileged communities.

A broader vision for educational equity

For Kyle Zimmer, President, CEO, and co-founder of First Book, the mission extends beyond providing books. It encompasses tackling systemic barriers that hinder learning, such as hunger, housing instability, and mental health challenges. “Education encompasses hunger, housing issues, mental health issues—and all of that is being dropped at the doorstep of the educators in our community,” Zimmer explains. Over 80% of educators within the First Book network report facing critical mental health challenges among the children they serve.

The organisation’s Research and Insights arm conducts over 30 studies annually, gathering data to inform its strategies and provide actionable solutions to educators. The First Book Accelerator programme translates cutting-edge research into practical teaching tools, empowering educators with the latest evidence-based strategies.

Education plays a pivotal role in driving climate action, fostering innovation, and ensuring peace and justice globally. Zimmer stresses the importance of equipping children with the skills to navigate an increasingly complex world. “We desperately need the next generation of engineers, creators, and innovators. That means they must be educated and inspired to tackle critical global challenges,” she notes.

Access to education not only improves individual lives but also contributes to environmental protection and economic equality. Educated individuals are more likely to engage in sustainable practices, advocate for social justice, and contribute to the global society.

Real world impact and collaboration

First Book’s initiatives go beyond classrooms, extending to community spaces such as soup kitchens, homeless shelters, and even barber shops. These efforts demonstrate the organisation’s commitment to embedding education into every aspect of children’s lives. By fostering global collaboration between public and private partners, First Book exemplifies the power of partnerships in advancing the global goals.

The organisation’s innovative model showcases how non-profits can act as bridge-builders, translating research and expertise into tangible resources for underserved communities. The result is a growing movement towards justice and strong institutions that prioritise equitable access to education.

Building momentum for the future

As the challenges of the modern world grow, the role of education in driving sustainable development becomes ever more critical. First Book’s mission aligns with the broader objectives of the UN Global Goals, demonstrating how targeted action can create lasting impact. By addressing the root causes of educational inequity, the organisation empowers millions of children to imagine, innovate, and thrive.
