Since its establishment in 2002, the Transgender Law Center (TLC) has emerged as a pioneering force in the struggle for transgender rights. Founded by Chris Daley and Dylan Vade, TLC initially operated as a project with a focus on California within the National Center for Lesbian Rights (NCLR). Over time, TLC has transformed into the largest organization in the United States dedicated specifically to the transgender community, led by transgender individuals themselves, committed to ensuring the ability of all individuals to live authentically and without discrimination, regardless of their gender identity or expression.
Legal Expertise and Precedent-Setting Litigation:
With a foundation in legal expertise and a dedication to racial justice, TLC has spearheaded numerous landmark litigation victories. Addressing issues ranging from employment discrimination to conditions within the prison system, educational access, immigration, and healthcare, TLC's advocacy has been instrumental in advancing the rights of transgender and gender nonconforming individuals across the nation. Landmark cases such as those involving Ash Whitaker and Shiloh Quine have not only secured vital legal victories but have also established significant precedents in the realm of transgender rights.
Organizing and Movement-Building:
In addition to its legal advocacy, TLC employs community-centered strategies aimed at fostering enduring change. Through organizing efforts and initiatives focused on movement-building, TLC empowers individual members of the community, educates the public, and mobilizes support for transgender rights. Initiatives such as Black Trans Circles, Positively Trans, the Black LGBTQIA+ Migrant Project, TRUTH, TLC@SONG, and the Disability Project have played pivotal roles in amplifying the voices of marginalized communities and working towards a more inclusive society.
Leadership and Diversity:
TLC's commitment to diversity and inclusivity is evident in its leadership and organizational structure. In 2015, Kris Hayashi made history as the first transgender person of color to lead an organization of TLC's magnitude and influence. Under Hayashi's stewardship, TLC continued to broaden its impact, incubating pioneering initiatives and securing critical legal victories. In 2023, Shelby Chestnut made history once again by assuming the role of TLC's executive director, marking the first instance of a Native transgender person leading a national LGBTQ organization. With her ancestral ties to the Assiniboine tribe of Montana, Chestnut brings a distinctive perspective to TLC's leadership, further enriching the organization's commitment to intersectional advocacy.
As the foremost national organization led by and for transgender individuals, the Transgender Law Center remains resolute in its mission to effect change in laws, policies, and societal attitudes, ensuring that all individuals can live securely, authentically, and free from discrimination.
