In northern Togo, access to clean water was once a distant dream rather than a right for many residents, impacting about 170,000 people. Each day, they faced the daunting task of trekking long distances under the scorching sun to collect water, diverting valuable time from education and work. This struggle underscored the critical need for reliable water sources, especially in remote areas where waterborne illnesses were rampant, affecting health, education, and economic activities.
The Islamic Development Bank (IsDB) spearheaded a transformative development project to address these challenges, aligning with UN Global Goal 6 - Clean Water and Sanitation. By directly delivering clean drinking water to communities, the project not only met their physical needs but also catalyzed positive change across various sectors.
The project's approach was comprehensive and tailored to the region's specific needs. It included drilling new boreholes to bring fresh water closer to communities and rehabilitating existing boreholes for sustained functionality. Moreover, mini water supply systems were constructed with extensive distribution networks, ensuring consistent water access and reducing the burden of long water-fetching journeys.
Central to the project's success was its focus on sustainability and community empowerment. Water management committees were established, comprising local residents trained to oversee water usage and prevent waste. Additionally, artisans were trained to maintain the water pumps and systems, ensuring their long-term functionality and creating employment opportunities within the communities.
The impact of the IsDB project was profound, surpassing its initial targets and benefiting 170,000 people. Increased water access led to improved health outcomes, higher school attendance (especially among girls), and enhanced agricultural productivity. The project's success offers valuable lessons for future endeavors, emphasizing the importance of maintenance, community involvement, and innovative approaches such as renewable energy integration for sustainability.
