Civil society and international organizations collaborate for better visibility of the SDGs

Fairtrade International, the world's leading social justice and sustainability certification, and the UN SDG Action Campaign, a United Nations Secretary-General initiative hosted by UNDP, have joined forces to accelerate progress toward the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

This new collaboration will help reach new audiences for the UN General Assembly's Global Week to #Act4SDGs on September 16-25, and the UN SDG Action Awards on September 27 in Bonn, Germany. Fairtrade International's Global CEO, Sandra Uwera, will join the Judging Panel and the Awards Ceremony to recognize transformative SDG initiatives that scale up sustainability and social justice efforts around the world.

Over 3,000 high-quality applications from 150 countries covering the entire scope of the Agenda 2030 were received for the 2022 edition of the Awards. The ceremony will be held in front of a select live audience at Bonn's Deutsche Telekom Headquarters and will be broadcast live to a global audience via UN WebTV and UN SDG Action Campaign platforms.

‘Fairtrade has long been at the forefront of the global drive in achieving the SDGs by the 2030 deadline. And„as we all know, that deadline is fast approaching“, said Ms. Uwera.

Whether in the fight against gender inequality, climate change or economic inequalities, the goals of the UN and Fairtrade have always been the same. Mutual support at official events to reach an even larger audience is therefore of mutual benefit.

Fairtrade will also join the movement by including Fairtrade's global SDG awareness efforts, such as Fairtrade Fortnights and agroforestry campaigns, on the Global Map of SDG Actions.

„In these challenging times for the world, the power is in our hands to flip the script on climate, justice and peace – which means re-writing the narrative of our times. The UN SDG Action Campaign and its partners have shown that we are stronger together as we can mobilise millions of people to bring about positive change“,Marina Ponti, Director of the UN SDG Action Campaign said.
